Wealth Tax in Catalonia: €500,000 Allowance, Rates and Who Files

Catalonia has one of the lowest wealth tax allowances in Spain. Here is how the tax is calculated, when you must file and how the national tax on large fortunes fits in.

Residents of Catalonia pay wealth tax (impost sobre el patrimoni) on net assets worth more than €500,000, after an exemption of up to €300,000 for their main home, as of November 2026. The Catalan rates run from 0.21% to 3.48%. You must file modelo 714 if tax is payable or your gross assets exceed €2 million, even when nothing is due.

Who pays wealth tax in Catalonia?

Wealth tax is a Spanish state tax whose allowance, rates and reliefs are set by each region. Tax residents of Spain pay on their worldwide net assets as they stood on 31 December, and the region where they live decides the rules. If you live in Catalonia, the Agència Tributària de Catalunya (ATC, the Catalan tax agency) rules apply. Non-residents pay only on assets located in Spain. Our guide to Spanish tax residency explains when you become a resident.

Two allowances reduce the taxable amount:

  • Main home (habitatge habitual): exempt up to €300,000 of its value.
  • General allowance (mínim exempt): the taxable base is reduced by €500,000 for Catalan residents.

Other exemptions in the national law, for example for certain business assets and shares in family companies that meet strict conditions, also apply. Debts such as a mortgage reduce the net value.

What are the Catalan wealth tax rates?

The ATC publishes this scale, labeled for tax years 2022 to 2025. It is the most recent scale on the ATC page as of November 2026; check it before filing for 2026.

Taxable base from Tax on amount below Rate on the next slice
€0 €0 0.210%
€167,129.45 €350.97 0.315%
€334,252.88 €877.41 0.525%
€668,499.75 €2,632.21 0.945%
€1,336,999.75 €8,949.54 1.365%
€2,673,999.01 €27,199.58 1.785%
€5,347,998.03 €74,930.46 2.205%
€10,695,996.06 €192,853.82 2.750%
€20,000,000.00 €448,713.93 3.480%

A simple example: someone with €1.2 million in savings and investments and a main home worth €400,000, with no debts, declares €100,000 of the home (€400,000 minus the €300,000 exemption) plus €1.2 million, then subtracts the €500,000 allowance. The taxable base of €800,000 falls in the fourth band: €2,632.21 plus 0.945% of €131,500.25, so about €3,875 before any cap.

Is there a cap on income and wealth tax combined?

Yes. Your wealth tax plus your income tax (IRPF, general and savings parts) cannot exceed 60% of your total IRPF taxable base. If they do, the wealth tax is reduced, but by no more than 80%. At least 20% of the calculated wealth tax is always payable. The ATC notes that, following Supreme Court rulings in October and November 2025, this cap also applies to non-residents.

The cap matters most for people with large assets that produce little taxable income. It does not help someone whose assets generate a normal income.

How does the solidarity tax on large fortunes fit in?

The national Impuesto Temporal de Solidaridad de las Grandes Fortunas (ITSGF) taxes net wealth above €3 million, valued on 31 December. It is designed as a complement to the regional wealth tax and charges an additional amount on large fortunes, on form 718. According to the Agencia Tributaria, form 718 is filed from 1 to 31 July of the following year and only online, and it asks for the reference number of your modelo 714 for the same year. A ministerial order published on 29 June 2026 changed form 718 from the 2025 tax year.

For 2025, the Agencia Tributaria lists six regions whose own wealth tax bonuses depend on the solidarity tax calculation: Andalucía, Galicia, Madrid, Cantabria, La Rioja and Murcia. Catalonia is not on that list.

Because Catalonia already charges wealth tax with a relatively low allowance, the extra amount under the solidarity tax depends on your figures. A tax adviser (assessor fiscal) can run both calculations.

Who must file, and when?

You must file modelo 714 if either applies:

  • the tax due is positive after the €500,000 allowance, deductions and reliefs, or
  • the value of your assets and rights exceeds €2 million, even if no tax is due.

The return is filed online through the Agencia Tributaria website. For tax year 2025, the period ran from 8 April to 30 June 2026, and returns with direct debit had to be filed by 25 June. The ATC also offers assisted filing by appointment.

  1. List all assets as of 31 December: property, bank accounts, investments, life insurance, vehicles and valuables.
  2. Value each asset under the wealth tax rules.
  3. Subtract debts and exempt assets.
  4. Apply the €300,000 home exemption and the €500,000 allowance.
  5. Apply the scale and check the 60% cap.
  6. File modelo 714 online and pay by the deadline.

Bottom line

If your assets are near €2 million, prepare a full list each December even in years when you expect no tax, because the filing duty depends on gross value, not on tax due. New residents who hold assets abroad should also check the separate reporting duty on modelo 720.

FAQ

Does the Beckham Law change wealth tax?

People taxed under the special regime are taxed like non-residents for wealth tax, on assets in Spain only. See our guide to the Beckham Law.

Is my pension fund included?

The national wealth tax law lists exemptions for certain pension rights. Check how your specific plan is treated with an adviser.

Do I pay if my only large asset is my home?

Not if its value stays within the two allowances. A main home worth up to €800,000 with no other assets leaves a taxable base of zero, since €300,000 is exempt and €500,000 is the allowance. If the home is worth more than €2 million, you must still file.

Do married couples file together?

No. Each spouse files individually and declares their share of jointly owned assets.
