Black Friday in Spain: Rights on Discounts, Returns and Guarantees
The 30-day previous-price rule, the 14-day online return window, the 3-year guarantee and how to complain in Barcelona if a shop will not put things right.

Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27, 2026. In Spain, any discount must be measured against the lowest price the shop charged in the previous 30 days, online buyers have 14 days to cancel without giving a reason, and new goods carry a 3-year legal guarantee. In Catalonia, unresolved problems go to a municipal consumer office (OMIC) or the Agència Catalana del Consum.
What counts as a real Black Friday discount in Spain?
A discount is only legal if it is measured against the right reference price. Article 20 of Ley 7/1996 de Ordenación del Comercio Minorista (Spain’s retail trade law) says that when a shop announces a price reduction, each item must show the previous price next to the reduced price. Since May 28, 2022, when a change made by Real Decreto-ley 24/2021 took effect, the previous price means the lowest price the shop charged for the same product in the 30 days before the reduction. You can read the consolidated text on the BOE, Spain’s official gazette.
In practice, this rule targets a familiar trick: raising a price in early November and then “cutting” it back on Black Friday. If a laptop sold for €699 on November 10, the shop cannot advertise it at “€799, now €699” on November 27. The only exceptions are products sold for the first time and short-dated food reduced to avoid waste.
The same article also bans making a promotion depend on a minimum or maximum percentage. Shops are free to choose how big their discounts are, and as of November 2026 there is no rule that Black Friday prices must be cut by any set amount.
How can you check whether a price was raised before the sale?
- Pick the items you want a week or two in advance and note or screenshot the current prices with the date visible.
- For online shops, use the product page history or a price tracker, and save the page on the day you buy.
- Compare the “before” price shown on Black Friday with the lowest price you recorded in the past 30 days.
- If the shop shows a higher “before” price than it actually charged, keep your screenshots: they are your evidence for a complaint.
Can you return something you bought on Black Friday?
It depends on where you bought it. For online, phone and other distance purchases, Spanish consumer law (Texto Refundido de la Ley General para la Defensa de los Consumidores y Usuarios, articles 102 to 108) gives you a right of withdrawal: you can cancel within 14 calendar days of receiving the goods, without giving a reason.
| Rule | Online and distance purchases, as of November 2026 |
|---|---|
| Time to cancel | 14 calendar days from the day you receive the goods |
| If the seller never told you about this right | The period is extended by 12 months |
| Refund deadline | Within 14 calendar days of your cancellation notice, using the same payment method |
| Sending the goods back | Within 14 days of telling the seller; you pay the direct return cost if the seller warned you in advance |
| Main exceptions | Made-to-measure or personalized items, perishable goods, sealed hygiene products and sealed software or media once unsealed |
For purchases in a physical shop, there is no general legal right to return an item that works properly. Many chains still accept returns, especially over the Christmas period, but that is the shop’s own policy. Read it before you pay: it is usually posted near the till, printed on the receipt or shown on the website, and the shop must honor the conditions it advertises.
What guarantee covers Black Friday purchases?
A Black Friday item has exactly the same guarantee as one bought at full price. For new goods bought from a business since January 1, 2022, the seller is responsible for any lack of conformity that appears within 3 years of delivery (article 120 of the consumer law). For digital content and services, the period is 2 years.
During the first 2 years, the law presumes the fault already existed at delivery, so the seller has to prove otherwise. In the third year, you may need to show that the problem was not caused by misuse. For second-hand goods, the seller and buyer can agree a shorter guarantee, but not under 1 year.
Your claim is against the seller, not only the manufacturer. You can ask for repair or replacement first; if that is impossible or fails, you can ask for a price reduction or a refund. Keep the receipt or invoice for as long as the guarantee lasts.
How do you complain in Barcelona if a shop will not fix the problem?
Start with the business itself. In Catalonia, every shop that sells to consumers must have the official complaint form, the full oficial de queixa, reclamació i denúncia (in Spanish, hoja de reclamación), and must answer within one month. Online shops must give you a postal or email address for complaints.
- Ask for the form in the shop, fill it in and keep your copy and the copy for the authorities. For online orders, complain in writing by email or through the shop’s customer service, and save the reference.
- Attach copies of the receipt, order confirmation, screenshots of the advertised price and any messages.
- If there is no answer within a month, or you disagree with it, take the complaint to Barcelona’s OMIC (Oficina Municipal d’Informació al Consumidor, the city consumer office) or to the Agència Catalana del Consum, Catalonia’s consumer agency.
- The office offers free mediation. If the business belongs to the consumer arbitration system, you can ask for arbitration, which ends in a binding decision.

Are shops open on the Sunday after Black Friday?
Many can be. Sunday, November 29, 2026 is on the general Catalan calendar of eight Sundays and holidays when shops may open, set by Ordre EMT/77/2025. The other dates left this year are December 6, 13, 20 and 27. Town councils can swap up to two dates, and opening is optional, so check the individual shop before you go. How do you avoid fake Black Friday websites?
Scam shops multiply in late November. A few checks catch most of them:
- Look for a full company name, tax ID (NIF or CIF) and physical address in the legal notice (aviso legal). Spanish law requires online sellers to show them.
- Be wary of discounts of 70% or more on recent phones, trainers or consoles, especially on sites you reached through social media ads.
- Pay by card or a payment method with buyer protection, never by bank transfer to an unknown seller.
- Type the shop’s address yourself instead of following links in emails or text messages about “your order”.
Bottom line
Write down the prices of the few things you really want this week, because a dated screenshot is the only easy way to prove a fake “before” price later. If you buy online, put a reminder in your calendar 10 days after delivery so you still have time to send back anything you regret.
FAQ
Does the 30-day rule apply to Cyber Monday too?
Yes. The rule applies to any announced price reduction, whatever the promotion is called, so it covers Cyber Monday on November 30, 2026, and the January sales as well.
Can a shop refuse a refund and give me a voucher instead?
For an online withdrawal, no: the refund must use the same payment method you used, unless you expressly agree to something else. In a physical shop, vouchers are allowed if that is the shop’s announced returns policy and the item is not faulty.
Do I need the box to use the guarantee?
No. The law does not require the original packaging for a guarantee claim. You do need proof of purchase, such as the receipt, invoice or card statement.
What if I bought from a seller in another EU country?
The 14-day withdrawal right and the minimum 2-year EU guarantee apply across the EU. For cross-border disputes, the European Consumer Centre in Spain can help free of charge.
