The menú del dia is a fixed-price weekday lunch served in many Barcelona restaurants, usually from about 13:00 to 16:00. It typically includes a first course, a main course, dessert or coffee, bread and a drink. Industry figures reported in 2026 put the average in Catalonia at about €15.70, and the price shown must already include VAT.

What does a menú del dia include?

The menú del dia (in Spanish, menú del día) is a set lunch with a short choice for each course, written on a board outside or on a separate card. The usual format:

Part Catalan name What to expect
First course primer plat A choice of 3 to 5 dishes: salads, soups, pasta, rice, vegetables, legumes
Main course segon plat A choice of meat or fish dishes, sometimes a vegetarian option
Dessert or coffee postres o cafè Fruit, flan, yogurt or a homemade dessert; some menus offer coffee instead
Bread pa Usually included
Drink beguda Often one drink: water, a soft drink, a beer or a glass of wine

None of this is fixed by law: each restaurant decides what its menu includes. Read the board carefully, because the details that change the bill are small print such as “drink not included”, “coffee extra” or “supplement” next to a dish. A supplement (suplement) is an extra charge for a dearer option, such as a better cut of meat or seafood.

When is the menú del dia served?

It is mainly a weekday lunch, Monday to Friday. Lunch in Barcelona starts later than in many countries, and most restaurants serve the menu from about 13:00 until 15:30 or 16:00. Arriving at 12:00 often means the kitchen is not ready; arriving after 15:30 risks the best dishes being gone.

Some restaurants also offer a weekend menu (menú de cap de setmana), usually with more elaborate dishes and a higher price. Very few offer the cheap set menu at dinner. If a restaurant advertises a menu in the evening, check whether it is the same deal.

How much does a menú del dia cost in Barcelona?

There is no official price list, so treat any figure as a guide. Surveys by the hospitality sector reported in 2026 put the average at about €14.70 across Spain and about €15.70 in Catalonia, among the highest of any region. Barcelona city tends to sit above the regional average.

As of November 2026, the price depends mostly on location and on what is included:

  • Neighborhood restaurants away from the main sights are generally cheapest.
  • Menus near major sights, on the seafront and in the center are often dearer for similar food.
  • A menu that includes wine or beer and coffee can be better value than a cheaper one that charges for each drink.
  • Weekend menus and “executive” business lunches cost more than the standard weekday menu.

Is VAT included, and what can a restaurant charge extra?

Yes, VAT must be included. Spanish consumer law requires the prices shown to consumers to be final prices with all taxes included, so a restaurant cannot add IVA (VAT) on top of the menu price at the end. If a bill adds VAT separately to a price that was displayed without it, you can question it and, if needed, ask for the official complaint form.

Three other rules are worth knowing:

  • Tap water. Since 2022, Spain’s waste law (Ley 7/2022, article 18) requires bars and restaurants to always offer customers the option of non-bottled water free of charge. Bottled water can still be charged.
  • Leftovers. Spain’s food waste law, Ley 1/2025, requires restaurants to let you take away food you have not eaten, except at buffets, and to tell customers about this option. These obligations apply from April 2026. Ask if the container is charged.
  • Allergens. EU rules require restaurants to tell you which of the 14 main allergens are in each dish. Ask staff before ordering.

Bread and small appetizers are a common source of surprise on à la carte meals. On a menú del dia the bread is usually included; when ordering à la carte, check the menu for a bread or cover charge and say no politely if you do not want what is brought to the table. If you think a charge is wrong, our guide to consumer complaints in Catalonia explains the official form, which every restaurant must have.

Should you tip after a menú del dia?

Tipping is not compulsory in Spain, and the menu price already includes service. Many people leave nothing after a weekday menu; others round up or leave a euro or two in coins if they were happy with the service. Leaving 10% or more is unusual for a set lunch. A restaurant cannot add a service charge that was not clearly announced in advance.

How do you order a menú del dia?

  1. Check the board outside for the price, what is included and any supplements.
  2. When you sit down, say you want the menu: “El menú, si us plau” in Catalan or “El menú, por favor” in Spanish.
  3. The server will list or show the choices; pick one first course and one main course.
  4. Order your drink. If wine is included, some places bring a small bottle or carafe for the table.
  5. Choose dessert or coffee at the end, then ask for the bill: “El compte, si us plau“.

Bottom line

Walk two or three streets away from any major sight before choosing a lunch menu, and read the board for the words “beguda inclosa” (drink included) and “suplement”. For a vegetarian or allergy-friendly lunch, ask before sitting down, because the main course choice is often limited to meat or fish.

FAQ

Can I order just one course from the menú del dia?

Some restaurants offer a “half menu” (mig menú) with one course plus dessert or coffee at a lower price. It depends on the restaurant, so ask.

Can two people share one menú del dia?

Generally no. The menu is priced per person, and restaurants usually expect each diner to order one.

Is the menú del dia available on public holidays?

Often not. Many restaurants serve the set menu only on working weekdays and switch to à la carte or a weekend menu on holidays.

Do I have to pay for water?

You can always ask for tap water free of charge. Bottled water is a normal paid drink unless the menu includes it.
