If you are pickpocketed in Barcelona, report it in person at any Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia’s police) station, open 24 hours, or at the Guàrdia Urbana’s tourist assistance office at La Rambla 43, which has a translation service. As of November 2026 the Mossos online report form is only for shops, so individuals file in person. The police report (denuncia) is free and you need it to replace stolen documents.

Where do pickpockets work in Barcelona?

Theft without violence (furt in Catalan, hurto in Spanish) concentrates where crowds, tourists and distractions meet. The usual settings:

  • Metro trains and platforms, especially on lines through the center and to the main sights, at the doors when people get on and off.
  • La Rambla and the Old City (Ciutat Vella), including markets, narrow streets and café terraces where phones sit on tables.
  • Beaches, where bags are left on towels while people swim.
  • Queues and viewpoints at major monuments, and around the airport and train stations, where people carry everything they own.

Common methods include someone asking for directions with a map, a stranger pointing at a stain on your clothes, a staged crush at a Metro door, a phone lifted from a table under a menu or leaflet, and a bag strap cut from behind. The pattern is distraction first, theft second.

How do you protect your things?

  • Keep phones and wallets in front pockets or a zipped bag worn on your front in crowds.
  • Do not leave a phone on a café table or a bag hanging on the back of a chair.
  • At the beach, take only what you need and keep valuables with someone who stays on the sand.
  • Carry a copy of your passport and leave the original in your accommodation safe when you do not need it. Residents should note their TIE or NIE number somewhere separate.
  • Turn on remote locking and location for your phone, and note your bank’s 24-hour card-blocking number.

How do you file a police report?

The Mossos accept reports 24 hours a day, every day, at any of their stations or police offices. They recommend booking an online cita prèvia (appointment) to cut waiting time, but you will be seen without one. Appointments can only be booked online, not by phone or at the station. Reports of domestic violence, gender violence and sexual offenses never need an appointment.

  1. Block your cards and phone first. In an emergency or if the thief is still nearby, call 112.
  2. Go to a police station as soon as possible, even if hours or days have passed. In the center, the Guàrdia Urbana’s Tourist Assistance Service at La Rambla 43 (phone 93 256 24 31) receives reports and helps victims with card cancellations and contacting consulates, airlines or hotels.
  3. Bring ID, and if possible the phone’s IMEI number, card numbers and a list of what was taken.
  4. Give the time and place, and the contact details of any witness.
  5. Keep your copy of the report. Insurers, consulates and the police all ask for it.

The Mossos site states that its internet report system is reserved exclusively for commercial establishments. Older Generalitat pages describe an online form for private individuals that had to be signed at a station within 72 hours; check the Mossos reports page for the current rules before relying on it.

How do you replace a stolen passport, NIE or TIE?

Document Who replaces it What you need
Foreign passport Your country’s consulate in Barcelona or embassy in Madrid Police report, photos, proof of identity; ask about an emergency travel document if you are flying soon
TIE card Policía Nacional, through a fingerprint appointment for a duplicate Police report, form EX-17, photo, passport and fee on form 790 code 012; see our TIE appointment guide
EU registration certificate Policía Nacional Police report and a new appointment; your NIE number stays the same
NIE certificate (paper) Policía Nacional The number does not change; you can request a new certificate if needed, see how to get an NIE
Spanish driving licence DGT Duplicate request with the DGT

If your TIE is stolen while you need to travel, ask the police about a return authorization (autorización de regreso) while the duplicate is processed.

Where can you see Barcelona’s official crime data?

The Mossos publish crime figures in their open data catalog, broken down by police area (àrea bàsica policial), and Idescat, Catalonia’s statistics institute, publishes the yearly evolution of known offenses. Barcelona City Council also runs a victimization survey that asks residents about crimes they experienced, including those never reported. Figures are only as good as reporting, so unreported thefts do not appear in police data. If you want police to see the pattern, report even small thefts.

Bottom line

Before you go out, photograph your passport, note your phone’s IMEI and save your bank’s blocking number, so a stolen phone or wallet takes a few calls to deal with rather than a lost day. Report every theft, even when nothing can be recovered: you need the report for insurance and documents.

FAQ

Is a police report needed for travel insurance?

Almost always. Insurers ask for the report from the Spanish police, filed close to the date of the theft.

Can I report a theft in English?

The Guàrdia Urbana’s tourist service at La Rambla 43 has a translation service. At other stations, ask for interpretation when you arrive.

What is the emergency number in Barcelona?

112 for police, ambulance and fire. For other health situations see our guide to urgent care in Barcelona.

Will the police recover my phone?

Sometimes, but do not count on it. The IMEI in your report helps identify a recovered phone as yours.
