Barcelona has 14 public holidays in 2026 and 14 in 2027, according to the Ajuntament’s official calendar: Spanish and Catalan holidays plus two city days, Whit Monday (Dilluns de Pasqua Granada) and La Mercè on 24 September. The remaining 2026 dates are 8, 25 and 26 December.

Who decides the holidays?

Three levels of government share the calendar. The Spanish state sets the national holidays, and each region can replace some of them with its own. The Generalitat publishes Catalonia’s official labor calendar each year; for 2027 it did so in Order EMT/52/2026, published on 1 April 2026. Each town then adds two local holidays. Barcelona’s are traditionally Whit Monday and the feast of the Mare de Déu de la Mercè, the city’s patron. In the tables below, S marks a state holiday, C a Catalan one and L a Barcelona local holiday.

What closes on a public holiday?

  • Public offices close, including OACs, police foreigner offices and tax offices. Holidays are non-working days for official deadlines, so a deadline that ends on a holiday moves to the next working day.
  • Banks close their branches; cards and online banking keep working.
  • Shops: most close, though some food shops and stores in areas with special opening rules may open. Check opening hours before you go.
  • Public transport runs, usually on a Sunday or holiday timetable. On big festival nights, such as Sant Joan and La Mercè, check TMB’s announcements for special service.
  • Pharmacies work on a duty rota (farmàcies de guàrdia), so at least one nearby stays open. Our guide to urgent care in Barcelona explains how to find one.
  • Museums and monuments set their own holiday hours, so check before you go. See free museum days in Barcelona.

What happens on the main city holidays?

La Mercè is Barcelona’s biggest festival, with several days of concerts, castellers (human towers), a correfoc (fire run) and a fireworks and music show. Our guide to La Mercè covers the program and safety rules. On the night before Sant Joan (23 June), the city celebrates with fireworks, bonfires and beach parties, and the Diada on 11 September brings institutional events and demonstrations.

How do holidays affect paperwork and deadlines?

Holidays are non-working days (dies inhàbils) for public administrations, and Saturdays are too. Under Spain’s administrative procedure law, when the last day of a deadline falls on a non-working day it moves to the next working day. That matters for appeals, document requests and tax filings. If a day is a holiday where you live but not where the office is, or the other way round, the law treats it as a non-working day in both cases. Online registers accept filings on holidays, but the filing counts as made at the start of the next working day for deadline purposes. Our guide to digital certificates in Spain explains how to file online.

Where can you check the official calendar?

The Ajuntament publishes the city’s public holiday calendar for the current and next year, with a file you can add to your phone’s calendar. The Generalitat publishes the Catalan labor calendar in its official gazette; the 2027 calendar appeared on 1 April 2026. Other towns in the metropolitan area have different local holidays, so check the town’s own website if you work or travel outside Barcelona.

Bottom line

Book paperwork appointments and deliveries around the holiday dates now, especially in December, when 8, 25 and 26 December all close public offices. If you work in another town, ask your employer which local holidays apply, because they follow the town where you work.
