How Bicing Works in Barcelona: Plans, Prices and Rules

Barcelona's public bike-share is built for residents, not visitors. Here is who can join, what each plan costs and the rules that add charges.

Bicing is Barcelona’s public bike-share, open to residents aged 16 and over with a Spanish DNI or NIE. As of November 2026, the flat-rate plan costs €50 a year with the first 30 minutes free on mechanical bikes, and the pay-per-use plan costs €35 a year plus €0.40 per trip. Electric bikes cost extra on both plans.

Who can sign up for Bicing?

The service says it is designed for people who live in Barcelona, not for tourists, and it points visitors to private bike rental companies. To register you need:

  • a valid DNI or NIE linked to the account holder; if you do not have one yet, see our guide to getting an NIE in Barcelona
  • a bank card that works for secure online payments, which is charged the annual fee
  • the SMOU app, the city’s mobility app, where you activate Bicing under “Serveis”, fill in your details and choose a plan
  • to be at least 16; users aged 16 or 17 also upload a signed authorization from a parent or guardian

The Bicing card arrives by post a few days after sign-up. It can be sent to an address elsewhere in Catalonia, but the service recommends a Barcelona address.

How much does Bicing cost?

There are four annual plans. The metropolitan ones also give access to AMBici, the bike-share run by the metropolitan area in neighboring towns. Prices from the official Bicing rates page, as of November 2026:

Plan Annual fee First 30 min, mechanical / electric Each extra 30 min up to 2 h, mechanical / electric
Bicing flat rate (Tarifa Plana) €50 Free / €0.40 €0.81 / €1.04
Bicing pay per use (Tarifa d’Ús) €35 €0.40 / €0.63 €0.81 / €1.04
Metropolitan flat rate (Bicing + AMBici) €65 Free / €0.40 €0.81 / €1.04
Metropolitan pay per use (Bicing + AMBici) €53 €0.40 / €0.63 €0.81 / €1.04

Past two hours, every plan charges €5.75 per extra hour. All plans include electric bikes. The flat rate pays off once you make more than a few dozen short mechanical trips a year: at €0.40 a trip, the €15 difference between the two Bicing plans equals about 38 rides.

How do you take and return a bike?

  1. At a station, tap your Bicing card or an NFC-enabled phone on the dock, or scan the bike’s QR code in the SMOU app.
  2. Wait for the dock light to turn from yellow to green, then pull the bike out.
  3. Check the brakes, tires and lights. You have three minutes to swap it for another bike without waiting.
  4. Ride to any Bicing station and return the bike to a free dock.
  5. If the station is full, request 10 extra free minutes in the app or at the station kiosk and ride to the next one.

Each trip can last up to two hours. Billing runs in 30-minute blocks, so a 31-minute ride is charged as two blocks.

Which rules can add charges or cause problems?

  • Extra charges for trips over 30 minutes, e-bike trips and pay-per-use trips are grouped and charged to your card every 15 days.
  • Your card is personal. Lending it is prohibited, and the insurance included in the subscription only covers the cardholder.
  • Reservations: if you fail to collect seven reserved bikes in a month, reservations can be suspended for 15 days.
  • Theft: if a bike is stolen while you are using it, you have two hours to report it to the police, then you notify Bicing and send the report when asked.
  • Traffic rules: use bike lanes where they exist, never bus lanes, and follow the same road rules as any other vehicle. A helmet is recommended, along with reflective clothing at night.

The annual fee renews automatically if you leave auto-renewal on. You can change plan in the 30 days before your subscription ends; the change applies from the next year.

What are the alternatives to Bicing?

If you also ride in the metropolitan towns around Barcelona that are served by AMBici, a metropolitan plan covers both Bicing and AMBici with one sign-up through SMOU; you then finish registration on the AMBici platform from the confirmation email. You cannot hold an active subscription to either service when you switch to a metropolitan plan.

Visitors without a DNI or NIE need a private bike or e-bike rental. For longer trips or bad weather, compare the cost with an integrated transport card; our guide to Barcelona transport passes lists the options. Drivers who are thinking of leaving the car at home can check which vehicles are affected by the low-emission zone.

Bottom line

Pick the flat rate if you will ride mechanical bikes several times a week, and pay per use if Bicing is a backup to the Metro. Keep the SMOU app installed even if you use the card, because it is the quickest way to find free docks and request the extra 10 minutes when a station is full.

FAQ

Can tourists use Bicing?

Is there insurance with Bicing?

Yes. The annual subscription includes civil liability insurance for damage you cause to third parties, plus cover for damage you suffer. Report accidents through the service’s contact form.

How long can I keep a Bicing bike?

Up to two hours per trip. After two hours, each extra hour costs €5.75 as of November 2026, on top of the 30-minute charges.
