Rodalies Trains in Barcelona: Lines, Tickets and Delay Refunds
The main Rodalies lines around Barcelona, which tickets are valid, the 2026 Renfe passes, how to check disruptions and what you get back when a train is late.

Rodalies de Catalunya is the commuter rail network around Barcelona, run by Renfe for the Generalitat. Integrated ATM tickets such as the T-casual and T-usual are valid on it within their zones. As of November 2026, Renfe also sells a €20 monthly pass for unlimited Rodalies travel, and trains over 15 minutes late qualify for a free replacement trip.
Which Rodalies lines serve Barcelona?
Eight lines make up the Barcelona commuter service, according to Renfe’s line list:
| Line | Route |
|---|---|
| R1 | Molins de Rei to Maçanet-Massanes along the Maresme coast via Mataró |
| R2 | Castelldefels to Granollers Centre |
| R2 Nord | Airport to Maçanet-Massanes |
| R2 Sud | Estació de França to Sant Vicenç de Calders, along the southern coast |
| R3 | L’Hospitalet to Vic and Puigcerdà |
| R4 | Sant Vicenç de Calders to Manresa |
| R7 | Fabra i Puig to Cerdanyola Universitat |
| R8 | Martorell to Granollers Centre, bypassing central Barcelona |
Regional lines with numbers such as R11, R13, R14, R15 and R16 also leave from Barcelona for Girona, Lleida and Tarragona; they have their own fares. Works often cut lines short or replace sections with buses, so check the current timetable PDF for your line on rodalies.gencat.cat before relying on the table above.
Main Rodalies stations in the city include Sants, Passeig de Gràcia, Plaça de Catalunya, Arc de Triomf and Clot, which connect with the metro. The R2 Nord is the only line that reaches the airport, at Terminal 2; our guide to getting from the airport to the city compares it with the other options.
Which tickets can you use?
You have two choices: integrated tickets from the ATM (Autoritat del Transport Metropolità, the metropolitan transport authority) or Renfe’s own Rodalies tickets.
- ATM integrated tickets (T-casual, T-usual, T-jove, T-familiar, T-grup, T-dia) work on Rodalies, metro, buses, tram and FGC within the zones they cover. The whole city is zone 1, so a zone 1 ticket covers any Rodalies trip inside Barcelona. Trips to towns such as Sitges, Mataró or Terrassa need more zones. Our guide to Barcelona transport passes lists prices by zone.
- Renfe Rodalies tickets are valid only on Renfe trains. They include single tickets, the 10-trip Bonotren (valid for a year and shareable by people making the same trip) and the passes below.
The single metro ticket (bitllet senzill) from TMB, Barcelona’s bus and metro operator, is not valid on Rodalies.
Which Renfe passes are available in 2026?
| Pass | Price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly pass (abonament mensual) | €20 | Anyone; unlimited Rodalies trips in all zones for a month |
| Youth pass (abonament jove) | €10 | People born between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2011 |
| Children’s pass (abonament infantil) | Free | People born between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2026 |
Prices are from Rodalies’ 2026 fares page, as of November 2026. The monthly pass is loaded onto a personal Renfe&Tu Rodalies card, which costs €1, and you need a DNI, NIE or passport plus a phone number. The youth and children’s passes need a registration code from the Ministry of Transport. Monthly passes can be bought until 31 December 2026 and used until 31 January 2027. A pass used by someone else is blocked, and the holder cannot buy another for 60 days.
For commuting further out, the €20 pass is usually cheaper than a multi-zone T-usual. If you also ride the metro and buses every day, compare it with the T-usual, which covers all modes.
How do you check disruptions?
Service alerts appear in the “Service updates” section of rodalies.gencat.cat, in the official Rodalies app and on the Rodalies account on X. The Rodalies information line is 900 41 00 41. Check before you leave, not on the platform: planned works are announced in advance and often come with replacement buses on part of a line.
What do you get when a train is late?
- Over 15 minutes late: ask for an Xpress Refund ticket at your destination station, right after arrival, showing the ticket you validated at the start. You get a free trip on the same route, valid for 30 days. It applies to Renfe tickets and to single- or multi-trip ATM integrated tickets.
- Destination station unstaffed: on the Barcelona lines you can request it online within 24 hours, with photos of both sides of the ticket.
- Prefer money: instead of the Xpress Refund, Rodalies refunds 50% of the ticket price for delays over 30 minutes and 100% for delays over 60 minutes. You must send the original tickets.
The Xpress Refund does not cover delays caused by force majeure outside the railway, such as strikes or sabotage, or by timetable changes announced in advance. It also does not apply to combined tickets or promotions.
Bottom line
If you live outside zone 1 and commute mainly by train, price the €20 Renfe pass against a multi-zone T-usual before buying. Keep your validated ticket until you have left the destination station, because without it you cannot claim anything for a late train.
