Barcelona Airport to City Center: Aerobús, Metro, Train or Taxi

Five ways to get from Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat to the center, which terminal each one serves and which tickets work.

From Barcelona-El Prat airport to the center, take the Aerobús to Plaça de Catalunya, the metro L9 Sud (airport ticket €5.90 as of November 2026), the Rodalies R2 Nord train from T2, a TMB bus, or an official taxi, which charges at least €21.00 from the airport.

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat has two terminals, T1 and T2, some distance apart. Aena runs a free shuttle bus between them 24 hours a day. This matters because the train only stops at T2, while the Aerobús has a separate line for each terminal. Check your boarding pass or the airline’s page to see which terminal you use.

How do the options compare?

Option Terminals Arrives at Ticket
Aerobús A1 / A2 A1 from T1, A2 from T2 Plaça de Catalunya Own ticket, sold at the stop and online; integrated passes not valid
Metro L9 Sud Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2 stations Zona Universitària, with changes to other lines Airport ticket €5.90, or T-usual, T-jove, T-dia
Rodalies R2 Nord T2 only (shuttle from T1) Sants and Passeig de Gràcia Zone 1 integrated tickets, including T-casual
TMB bus 46 Airport stops listed by Aena Plaça d’Espanya Zone 1 integrated tickets
Night buses N17, N18 Airport stops listed by Aena Plaça de Catalunya (Ronda Universitat) Zone 1 integrated tickets
Taxi Ranks at T1 and T2 Your door Meter plus €4.60 airport supplement; €21.00 minimum

Fares as of November 2026, from TMB, ATM and the AMB Metropolitan Taxi Institute. Lines and terminals are from Aena’s airport transport pages.

Is the Aerobús the fastest option?

For Plaça de Catalunya and the Eixample, the Aerobús is usually the simplest: one direct bus, luggage space and a stop right in the center. Line A1 serves T1 and A2 serves T2, and both end at Plaça de Catalunya. It is a separate service with its own fares, so a T-casual or T-usual does not work on it. Check the current price on the operator’s website before you travel; we could not confirm an official 2026 fare.

How does the metro L9 Sud work?

Line L9 Sud has stations inside both terminals and runs to Zona Universitària. To reach the center you change lines, for example to L1 at Torrassa, L5 at Collblanc or L3 at Zona Universitària. The ride is longer than the bus for most central addresses, but it is the cheapest choice if you already hold a monthly pass.

The airport stations have special ticket rules. According to ATM:

  • the T-usual and T-jove are valid with no extra charge
  • the T-dia allows one return trip to the airport stations
  • the T-casual, T-familiar and T-grup are not accepted there
  • everyone else buys the airport ticket, €5.90 as of November 2026

Our guide to Barcelona transport passes explains each ticket.

When is the R2 Nord train the better choice?

The Rodalies R2 Nord leaves from the station next to T2 and stops at Barcelona Sants and Passeig de Gràcia, which makes it handy for high-speed train connections at Sants. Because the airport is in fare zone 1, a T-casual or other zone 1 integrated ticket covers the trip. If you land at T1, take the free shuttle to T2 first. Rodalies services are often disrupted by works or incidents, so check the line status before you rely on it; see our Rodalies trains guide.

How much is a taxi from the airport?

Official Barcelona taxis are black and yellow, and the ranks are on the arrivals level of each terminal. The AMB’s 2026 fares, in force since January 2026, are:

Item Amount (as of November 2026)
Flag fall €2.80
Per km, weekdays 8:00 to 20:00 (tariff 1) €1.35
Per km, nights, weekends and holidays (tariff 2) €1.66
Airport supplement (pickup or drop-off) €4.60
Minimum fare from the airport, all supplements included €21.00
Fixed fare airport to cruise terminal (Moll Adossat) €46.00

The meter shows the fare, and drivers must apply the official tariff. For the full list of supplements and how to complain, see our guide to Barcelona taxi fares.

Which option suits your destination?

  • Plaça de Catalunya, the Gothic Quarter, the Raval or the lower Eixample: the Aerobús goes straight there.
  • Sants station, for trains to Madrid or the rest of Spain: the R2 Nord from T2 is direct.
  • Passeig de Gràcia and the upper Eixample: the R2 Nord also stops at Passeig de Gràcia.
  • Plaça d’Espanya, Montjuïc and the Fira: TMB bus 46 ends at Plaça d’Espanya.
  • Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts or the university area: the metro L9 Sud, with a change to L1, L3 or L5.
  • The cruise terminal (Moll Adossat): taxis charge a fixed fare of €46.00 from the airport as of November 2026.

What if you land at night?

The metro and trains stop running overnight, and their exact first and last times change with the season and on weekends, so check TMB and Rodalies for your date. At night the TMB night buses N17 and N18 run between the airport and Plaça de Catalunya, and both accept zone 1 integrated tickets. Taxis wait at both terminals around the clock.

Bottom line

If you live here and hold a T-usual or T-jove, take the metro or R2 Nord and pay nothing extra. Visitors heading to the center with luggage usually find the Aerobús simplest, while a taxi makes sense for groups of three or four once the €21 minimum is split.
